Women's basketball falters in second half of season opener
The Threshers continue their season in California this weekend.
On Wednesday at Thresher Gym, the Bethel (0-1) women’s basketball team was defeated by the Northwestern College Raiders by 45 points with a score of 99-54 to give the Threshers a loss to open the season.
“I thought we had great intensity in the first quarter and great performances in our offense and defense and then obviously in the 3rd and 4th quarter, we allowed them to run with some points,” head coach Derrick Pringle Jr. said. “Making layups and free throws are a must and being able to handle runs against a quality team, and being able to respond to that is the takeaway.”
The Threshers’ 54 points were spread out between 11 different scorers. Freshman Caryn Yoder was the leader with 10 points. Sophomore Josie Stupey and junior Brianna Clark added in eight and six, respectively.
Redshirt freshman Parker Schroeder led the team in steals with three. Northwestern was led in scoring by Molly Schany and Maddie Jones, who scored 17 points each. Schany shot 70-percent from the field.
Pringle rotated 13 players in for Bethel throughout the game and established a variety of lineups — which he feels excited about moving forward.
“We’ll focus on being disciplined on offense and defense,” Pringle said. “We had some good moments with some lineups that I realized I could use more … so being able to notice those are key.”
The Threshers look to continue their season on the west coast and improve against Simpson University (Calif.) on Friday night.
