Taste of Newton brings community together through local food
This Newton tradition will take place Thursday evening.
Every year the city of Newton hosts Taste of Newton, an event which invites local businesses, organizations, and community members to set up booths to sell food. This event is part of the four-day Fall Fest that Bethel College puts on.
Taste of Newton attracts thousands of people each year and is an event that the Bethel community highly anticipates.
“Taste of Newton offers a unique experience to try new foods that people may or may not have known,” said junior Lucy Buller from Newton, who has been attending the Taste of Newton since 2018.
While it has significance for many Bethel alumni and students, new Bethel students have also been waiting for this event.
“I love food,” said freshman Emilee Phoon from Bennington. “It's going to be neat to explore the different types of food offered by different community members and businesses.”
Additionally, Taste of Newton is a time where different cultures and groups can come together and dip into one another's cultures.
“Normally, Newton and North Newton are quite segregated,” explained biology professor Francisca Méndez-Harclerode. “Taste of Newton is the only event and time in which all the population of Newton and North Newton can be found at one place, promoting diversity and inclusion.”
The event will also feature performances by the Bethel jazz ensemble, the Newton Community Children’s Choir, the Newton High School Railiners dance team, and a variety of other local groups.
Taste of Newton will be held in downtown Newton from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday evening.
