Spring Play Preview: The Bookstore
Reflections from director Damon Klassen, preceding Bethel's spring play
This weekend, the Bethel College Theater Department will put on their production of The Book Store, by Adam Szymkowicz.
When asked about the premise of this play, Damon Klassen, director of theater, stated that it is a “light-hearted one-act about a young woman who inherits a bookstore from her aunt. She has to decide whether to keep it and run it, or cash in and live her life in New York City.”
This play is “basically one day in the life of this bookstore.” Audience members can “expect to meet a very eccentric group of individuals, employees and customers” as the play explores themes of “finding love, and finding your purpose in life,” Klassen explained.
Shows like these take a lot of hard work to come to fruition. When asked about the preparation and practice process, Klassen emphasized the work of set building and finding times to practice. He also thanked Technical Director Jocelyn Wilkinson and the cast members for their hard work.
“Theater is always a ton of work,” said Klassen. “The set is a big part of the show. Jocelyn and the theater practicum class have worked really hard, and I think people will enjoy the scope of the set.”
When asked what audience members should expect to take away from the play, Klassen mentioned that he surprised himself with this year’s play selection. He said:
“I was planning for a political satire, but this play grabbed me. I hope people will be delighted, amused, lifted, and feel that they have had a delightful escape from the realities of our world.”
Show times are 7:30 p.m. April 25 and 26, with a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. April 27, in Krehbiel Auditorium in Luyken Fine Arts Center. There will also be an open dress rehearsal on Thursday, April 24 at 7:30.
