SGA Report | ISRs approved, new legislation discussed
The group met on Tuesday to open the spring semester.
The Student Government Association (SGA) met on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in WAC 210 to start 2024. With six voting senators present or voting by proxy, the SGA passed an Individual Scholarship Request (ISR) and discussed some new legislation on the horizon.
At the final meeting of last semester, the SGA approved two ISRs. For Tuesday’s meeting, the SGA continued this pattern and approved one more ISR.
As it is the start of a new semester, new committees will be established for the group. Last semester, the SGA had a committee that focused on replacing the showerheads and shower curtains in the residence halls leading to the unanimous passage of Bill 91-019 to Replace Shower Heads and Curtains. This bill designated $2,930 for enough showerheads and curtains to replace problematic ones in the residence halls.
This project has not officially been completed, but maintenance has been working to replace these as supplies come in and as they have time and will carry into this semester.
For this spring, the group reviewed committee suggestions generated from the last meeting which will establish projects the SGA chooses to work on during the semester. Options for these include campus safety, whiteboards for the library and the chemistry floor of the Krehbiel Science Center, updates in Mem Hall, and improved student parking. These suggestions came from senators and the concerns they heard from the student body.
The end of last semester also saw the creation of the Table Tennis Club by Bill 91-020 for the Formation of the Table Tennis Club. This bill registered the Table Tennis Club as a Registered Student Organization (RSO) and designated $250 for the club’s budget from the special projects fund.
With new RSOs being created and the SGA constitution’s recent rewriting, the SGA has also been working on rewriting the RSO manual for future clubs. During this meeting, the senators present were able to ask questions about the document as well as express concerns and suggestions. As the group continues to meet over the semester, they will work toward finalizing and establishing this document.
The SGA will be meeting again this year at 11 a.m. on Tuesdays in WAC 203 unless otherwise stated. Their next meeting will be Jan. 30.
