SGA Report | At-Large senators confirmed, HOSA introduced to campus
Two senators added, one bill passed unanimously in SGA's return from Fall Break.
On Sunday, the Bethel College Student Government Association (SGA) held its third meeting of the 90th session. After a brief rest during Fall Break, SGA got back into the swing of things with some routine legislation despite absences.
In its last meeting, SGA split into committees to address parts of campus life. In Sunday’s meeting, these committees reported their work from the following meeting.
The Academic Affairs Committee reported progress with on-campus technology updates — particularly in the library. The Student Engagement Committee reported progress with the Red Flag Campaign and the possible campus activities that might be associated with said project. The Student Life Committee reported options for action on campus.
Associate Justice Peter Buller swore in three new at-large senators: sophomores Matthew Fleck and Zachary Watson and junior Jalyn Todd.
Newly confirmed at-large senator Matthew Fleck introduced Bill 90-008 for the Submission of HOSA - Future Health Professionals. HOSA is an international club for students who are interested in pursuing a career in health care. This club would provide opportunities for students to lead, network, and compete against other students in similar professions from other schools.
“I wanted to bring HOSA [to Bethel] because some of my favorite memories I have from high school are from HOSA conferences and meeting new people,” Fleck from Cherokee said. “Bethel didn’t really have anything like HOSA, but we know the students here are smart and could do well in competitive events. We’re [the state’s] third collegiate chapter now, so Kansas is just starting to grow at this level.”
The bill passed 8-0 with Senator Fleck abstaining from the vote.
In finishing thoughts, President Taylor Dashney and Vice President Josh Kennell updated the group on the Talkaphone project as well as the possible commuter lounge. SGA will meet next on Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. in WAC 203.
