Senior Recital Spotlight: Josué Coy Dick
Reflections from Josué Coy Dick following his recital
Josué Coy Dick, a senior from Newton, performed his senior violin recital on Saturday, April 5. Coy Dick performed a variety of pieces including works from Bach, Mozart, Brahms, and Ginastera. He was accompanied by Assistant Professor of Music Dr. Christina Liu.

Recitals such as these take a lot of preparation and skill, and these skills are often developed at an early age. Coy Dick thanked his violin teacher Nancy Johnson for all the work that she has done to help him improve as a player.
Coy Dick has been taking lessons from Johnson since he was about 13 years old. He noted, “I would come to Bethel for my lessons when I was younger, and since then, she’s been very important in providing me with opportunities to play violin.”
Making note of the positive effect Bethel professors have had on his playing, Coy Dick stated, ”I’ve really enjoyed playing in the chamber orchestra with Kristopher Hilding. It's been a great opportunity with a good group. He chooses interesting music that I wouldn’t have the chance to play in other ensembles. I have also appreciated Dr. Waters, he gives me lots of different opportunities to play at different gigs with the concert choir.”
Coy Dick is a well-rounded instrumentalist who plays in the chamber orchestra, is a substitute for the Wichita Symphony Orchestra, plays in the Newton Mid-Kansas Symphony Orchestra, and has played with the Wichita Grand Opera.
When asked where this love for music is rooted from, Coy Dick answered that “music has always been an important part of my life and an important part of my community. It’s how my community and family connect and spend time together. When I was a kid, I would practice piano and violin with my grandmother, so it’s always been an important part of my life.”
