Schrag breaks school record in 3,000-meter at Friends First Chance Invitational
Indoor track and field started their season with many promising results in Wichita.
WICHITA — The Bethel men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams had a promising start to the season on Thursday after having multiple personal bests and school records.
Sophomore Bethany Schrag won the 3000 meters with a time of 11:38.33 to set a new school record. The record was previously set by Natalie Graber, who graduated in 2022.
“I’m very thankful for my coach and my teammates,” said Schrag from Valley Center. “Their presence and their support helped me tremendously and I could not have done it without them.”
Other notable results on the women’s side came from Mia Roman who finished 2nd in the 600 meters with a time of 1:43.57 and Taryn Paulino who finished 3rd with a time of 1:49.22.
On the men’s side there were also strong results for the first meet of the season such as from Tobin Wise who finished 5th in the mile with a time of 4:37.40. Braden Esau finished 4th in the 600 meters with a time of 1:31.33.
Luke Schmidt, Wise, and Marcus Fiedler finished 5th, 6th and 7th in the 3,000 meters with times of 9:30, 9:33.96 and 9:35.40. The 4x400-meter relay team of Fabian Talavera, Isaiah Bartel, Simon Hodge and Esau finished 2nd with a time of 3:38.11.
“I’m really proud of how everyone on the team performed considering the short week and the challenges that the winter weather presented us this year,” said head coach Aaron Stallsworth. “We left the meet with multiple personal bests along with Bethany Schrag’s 3000 meter school record performance. I’m very confident that we will build upon this week and improve as the season progresses.”
The Threshers are set to compete on Saturday at the SNU Indoor Invitational in Norman, Okla.
