O'Neill brings Bach to Bethel in organ recital
Dr. Douglas O'Neill concluded Bethel's 2023-24 organ recital series on Tuesday.
The final performance of Bethel College’s 2023-24 Organ Recital Series concluded with a resounding success as Dr. Douglas O’Neill, praised as one of the foremost talents in the field, delivered an all-Bach program at the administration building chapel on Feb. 13.
O’Neill's mastery of the organ, piano, and harpsichord, combined with his extensive experience as a church musician and choral conductor, was evident throughout the evening as he navigated through a selection of Johann Sebastian Bach’s most intricate compositions with finesse and depth.
The program featured a diverse range of pieces, including Bach’s “Prelude and Fugue in C, BWV 545,” "Four Duets from Clavierübung III, BWV 802-805", “Prelude and Fugue in G Minor, BWV 535,” “Trio Sonata in G, BWV 530,” and the compelling “Fantasy and Fugue in G Minor, BWV 542,” among others. Each piece showcased O’Neill's technical prowess and his profound understanding of Bach's musical language.
O’Neill is also the first prize winner of the 1999 Dublin International Organ Competition. O’Neill’s illustrious career has been marked by performances across the United States and Europe, as well as his roles in various prestigious institutions and competitions. This speaks volumes about his expertise and dedication to the craft.
He achieved tenure at the Cathedral of the Madeleine in Salt Lake City, Utah, and now serves as Director of Formation in Sacred Music and Liturgy at Christ the King School and Parish in Kansas City.
Attendees of the recital were treated to a memorable evening of music. O’Neill’s connection to Bach’s music and technical brilliance left an impression on all those present.
