Newton Rec. Commission holds cornhole and pickleball tournaments for community
If students are looking to train for upcoming SAC events like the annual cornhole tournament, this is their chance.
While Bethel students were busy playing Capture the Flag on Saturday evening, Newton Recreation Commission (NRC) hosted their own games on Saturday.
Both a cornhole tournament and a pickleball tournament hosted at NRC took place, inviting teams from all over the county to participate. Teams were asked to pay a $30 fee per team, and the rounds that took place that Saturday were the first of a season, which will span over the course of October and, in the case of pickleball, into November.
Cornhole players are guaranteed four games before the end of the season tournament, while pickleball players are guaranteed six before their tournament.
The event is to encourage fun, active community involvement, with the rec center even willing to supply equipment for the pickleball players such as paddles. The NRC aims to “improve the health, quality of life and recreational opportunities for all residents in USD 373 in collaboration with the community.”

Other upcoming events include a Disc Golf Putting league (Dec. 3) and a Basketball league (Nov. 10). NRC offers various memberships, with prices as low as $36 a month, with access to certain facilities such as the pool completely free of charge during certain hours.
