New disc golf club sparks interest, competes in area
The club got its start at Fall Fest and now participates in tournaments against other teams.
Something has risen in pride of the baskets on and around campus. Disc Golf is now played by at least one group of students everyday and the club has officially started, which is led by Bethel staff member Eric Preheim.
It all started at Fall Fest where Preheim and other members of the club helped get students and community members to sign up as well as buy club t-shirts and sign up for tournaments also.
Since then, the club has had multiple tournaments and different events to get fundraising and spend time together competing against others in the area.
“It’s exciting to be a part of a new club like this,” said sophomore Timothy Schrag from Goessel. “It’s fun to not only see how the team is progressing, but also to see the growing interest in the club as the disc golf season continues. I’m looking forward to the next couple of tournaments. The team seems to only be playing better as time goes on.”
Less than a month ago, the club had a tournament where multiple students participated with locals at the Clapp Disc Golf Course in Wichita and scored well as a team and individuals.
“We played the west side [of the course] for the singles round and the east side [of the course] for the team scramble,” senior Daniel Kaufman from Moundridge said. “Our singles round didn’t go as well as we were hoping for, but we came back as a team and shot one over in the team scramble round.
“This was a decent score for us as a team especially since this was the longest course we had competed at this season so far. We look forward to competing again in the spring.”
Next semester, the club looks to do more tournaments around the community and take the time to recruit and look for ways to get other students to join them on the fun and adventurous inaugural first year.
