Local restaurants, for whatever you're craving
Next time you get the itch to eat out, try one of these hole-in-the wall gems in Newton and Wichita.
How many times have you been hungrily scrolling through Google’s recommended restaurants only to find the same boring chains you eat at all the time? I used to be stuck in this situation at least once a month. After a while, I arrived at the conclusion that the internet algorithm cannot provide adequate restaurant suggestions because the internet has no taste buds. Next time you’re desperate for some great local food, here are some recommendations listed by food type.
Italian: Genova
Genova Italian Restaurant is a Newton favorite. Their food is truly incredible with the best Italian menu selection in the area. The staff has always been friendly and helpful – the entire atmosphere of the restaurant feels warm and welcoming. Genova is a great date spot and it gets bonus points for having extremely reasonable prices.
Pizza: Back Alley Pizza
Newton is lucky to be the home of an affordable and delicious brick-oven pizzeria. With generous portions, endless menu options, and quick service, Back Alley Pizza is ideal for the pizza-lover in each of us.
Americana: Old Mill Tasty Shop
Located in the oldest building in downtown Wichita, Old Mill Tasty Shop gives its patrons the most delicious slice of the past we could ask for. Whether you’re craving a sandwich, dessert, or homemade soda – Old Mill Tasty Shop has you covered. They represent everything good about the classic American diner.
Vietnamese: Little Saigon
Little Saigon’s menu is unrivaled; it appears to stretch on for miles. And the best part about it is everything on the menu looks and tastes divine. I have never witnessed anyone ordering something they did not devour with ultimate satisfaction. Additionally, the large serving sizes often leave the option of an extra takeout meal. With fast, friendly service and incredible food, Little Saigon has become a go-to restaurant for many Wichita locals.
Soup and Salad: Tanya’s Soup Kitchen
If I had a dollar for everytime I find myself craving Tanya’s cleopatra salad…let’s just say their food lives up to its hype. The name may suggest that Tanya’s solely specializes in soup, but their salads and sandwiches are equally delicious. Wichita residents rave about Tanya’s Soup Kitchen, and once you eat there, you’ll understand why.
Not every great local restaurant found its place on this list so here are some honorable mentions: College Hill Deli, Noffy’s Passage to India, Carlos’ Kitchen and Cater, and The Bread Basket.
Wichita and Newton have a great selection of local, high-quality restaurants. The internet may not understand our tastes, but luckily plenty of local restaurants do; keep this list on hand for the next time you need some quality food.
