Intramural sports foster student community
Corbin Unruh speaks about Bethel's intramural scene.
In the bustling campus life, extracurricular activities play a pivotal role in creating bonds and fostering a sense of community among students. Among these activities, intramural sports stand out as a vibrant avenue for students to engage in friendly competition, stay active, and forge lasting connections.
Corbin Unruh, from Moundridge, is at the helm of organizing and coordinating the array of sports leagues offered throughout the year. From indoor soccer to dodgeball, and upcoming leagues in basketball, ultimate frisbee, and volleyball, the variety ensures there's something for everyone.
"I work closely with Bethel staff to secure gym and field availability, as well as ensuring we have the necessary equipment for each sport," Unruh shared, highlighting the behind-the-scenes effort required to make these leagues possible.
However, orchestrating these leagues isn't without its challenges. Unruh notes that garnering sufficient team sign-ups and finding a suitable time slot that accommodates all participants can be quite the juggling act. Yet, despite these hurdles, the joy and camaraderie fostered within the league are palpable. "Some students take it very seriously, while others are more laid back and here to have fun. Regardless, everyone has a good time," Unruh affirmed.
It's the memorable moments on the field or court that often become the heartbeat of intramural sports. Unruh recounts an unforgettable instance from the indoor soccer league: "there was an insane last-second goal in the semi-finals that was very memorable."
Beyond the thrill of competition, intramural sports serve as a catalyst for involvement and physical activity, enriching the campus community. "It gets students involved and active and creates community," Unruh emphasized. Whether it's forging new friendships, relieving academic stress, or simply staying fit, intramural sports offer a myriad of benefits.
For those who may hesitate to join, Unruh offered a simple yet compelling invitation: "just sign up! We will always let everyone play and will find someone a team if they do not have their own."
It's this inclusive ethos that underscores the essence of intramural sports at Bethel – everyone is welcome, regardless of skill level or experience.
As students lace up their sneakers and gear up for the next game, they're not just stepping onto the field or court, they're fostering connections beyond the final buzzer.
