Increased security on campus
Bethel College shifts its focus to increased security on campus.
Bethel College has a rich campus culture that goes back to the college’s founding. Students have the freedom and opportunity to take part in these traditions while also enjoying their own free time. However, in some cases, these freedoms can be used in ways that are not acceptable.
The lack of security on campus has been a concern for a time now at Bethel, and the college has taken action. The recent installment of cameras in Warkentin Court has further helped the campus become safer, providing an additional layer of protection for students and staff.
The Newton Police Department has also taken part in helping the campus become more of a safe place. The Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students - Dr. Meshonya Wren-Coleman, known as Dr. MeMe, stated “Chief Bethard and his team have been quite helpful and I truly appreciate the service that they provide.” Dr. MeMe emphasized that although Bethel does not have its campus security it is important to stay well connected with authorities to “ensure our campus is safe.”
Dr. MeMe mentioned that the college also participates in a city-wide committee that keeps several of us in the loop about things we need to be aware of as a campus. She also added, “Safety is a priority for the Bethel College cabinet members and it is a part of our Strategic Plan #5 that holds us accountable that certain standards are in place.”
The dedication shown by the staff of Bethel College has been a major part of why these changes have been implemented. Dr. MeMe also references a Collegian article published last year by Micah Wenger on the upcoming and now-installed cameras on campus. It seems Bethel College has taken this issue head-on, in hopes of ensuring that Bethel College is a safe place for students to call home. The college’s commitment to student safety reflects a broader dedication to maintaining a secure and welcoming environment for all.
