Getting ready: The process, preparation for Thursday night's wind ensemble concert
The concert includes a variety of compositions designed to feature the best of this staple Bethel band.
Bethel College is gearing up for a musical extravaganza as the wind ensemble takes the stage for its first live performance of the new semester. This event is guaranteed to be a captivating evening showcasing both classic band repertoire and contemporary works.
“I wanted to both pick up on where Boettger left off with the wind ensemble and give the students and community a ‘musical introduction’ to their new Director of Band,” said wind ensemble director Chris Miertschin.
To do this, the Wind Ensemble will perform Gustav Holst’s “Second Suite in F” in its entirety, with a focus on the exhilarating “Fantasia on Dargason” followed by Percy Grainger’s “Irish Tune from County Derry.” "Grainger is considered one of the great early wind band composers," noted Miertschin, making this piece particularly engaging.
Providing a pleasant contrast, the ensemble will also perform Jaime Texidor's lively Spanish march, “Amparito Roca.” A concert highlight is the presence of composer Grace Baugher, who will be in-residence.
“I'm excited to bring her to our campus and share her music with everyone,” said Miertschin. Baugher's composition “Remembering the Remarkables” symbolizes mountain ascents. This is meant to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the U.S. women's suffrage movement.
The musical journey ends with selections from the legendary American musical “West Side Story.” Miertschin, an avid pit orchestra musician, anticipates bringing this theatrical experience to the concert stage.
In rehearsal, the wind ensemble incorporates group warm-up exercises and innovative techniques. Miertschin emphasized their dedication to meticulous practice. "The wind ensemble has really come together in preparation for Thursday's performance,” said Miertschin.
"We want our audience to have fun and leave feeling just a bit lighter than when they sat down,” said ensemble member Eli Regier from Newton. He also highlighted the significance of connecting with the audience as the ensemble will aim to provide an entertaining and uplifting musical experience.
As the Bethel College wind ensemble prepares to take the stage, there is a guaranteed diverse and emotionally appealing musical journey waiting for all attendees. With a combination of classic compositions and contemporary creations, Miertschin and the ensemble members are ready to captivate the audience's hearts and minds.
The wind ensemble concert is Thursday night at 7 pm in Krehbiel Auditorium.
