Football takes opening game win against McPherson
Threshers improve to 1-0 after the 14-13 victory on Saturday night.
In their season opener last Saturday, the Bethel football team took on the McPherson Bulldogs. The Threshers came out on top, with a score of 14-13, after not scoring for nearly three quarters. Sophomore quarterback DJ Ciers was credited with the comeback highlights.
At the very beginning of the game, McPherson received their first touchdown, leaving the Threshers trailing early. Late in the first quarter, senior Trey Palmer was able to snatch an interception. Unfortunately, the Thresher offense gave the ball back to the Bulldogs in short order, as Ciers threw an interception of his own.
Going into halftime, the Bulldogs would lead 13-0, following another touchdown and missed point after opportunity. The Threshers had many penalty flags thrown their way, creating scoring roadblocks.
“At halftime, we talked about that we needed to just keep battling and something good [would] eventually happen,” Ciers, a sophomore from Houston, Tex. said.
After the halftime break, the third quarter began with both offenses battling to make something happen. Ciers would rush for an 11-yard touchdown, with one minute and 55 seconds remaining in the third quarter, making the score 7-13, still in favor of the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs' fate would ultimately be decided after many penalties were again given. Ciers threw a floating pass to sophomore Caden Hernandez in the end zone. Kicker Logan DeMond would make the point-after attempt with five minutes remaining in the game.
The Thresher defense would earn two defensive stops to then receive the ball back and take a knee, winning the contest 14-13.
“Coming out of halftime I just tried to do anything I could for the team to put them in the best situation to win,” Ciers said.
The Threshers will be back in action on Saturday at 7 p.m. when they take on Friends in Wichita.
