Football remains undefeated after rolling over Friends
The Threshers recover from a slow start to secure their second straight win.
WICHITA — This past Saturday night, the Thresher football team traveled to Friends for another KCAC battle, this time in the rain. Bethel would defeat the Falcons 28-16 in the end.
In the first quarter, the Falcons — led by former Threshers head coach Terry Harrison — looked unstoppable, scoring a field goal and a touchdown, making the Threshers, again, be behind from the start.
Before halftime, the Thresher defense forced a fumble, giving quarterback DJ Ciers the ball in the final minutes of the half. Ciers would then run for a 25-yard touchdown, bringing the score 10-7 with the Threshers still down going into the half.
Coming out of halftime, Ciers seemed to be the hero for the Threshers, similar to last weekend’s contest as well. After five minutes of play in the third quarter, Ciers would find the end zone yet again. He’d run 42 yards for another touchdown before going into the fourth quarter, putting the Threshers up 21-10.
At the start of the fourth quarter, the Falcons would find the endzone but missed a two-point conversion opportunity, making the score 21-16.
With only 54 seconds remaining in the game, the Falcons were trying to pass the ball out of their own end zone but senior Josh Seabolt crushed their chances at winning the game by gaining a pick-six and taking the ball into the end zone, making the final score 28-16.
“We just played fundamentally sound on defense. Everybody did their assignments,” Seabolt from Cimarron said. Following the game, Seabolt was named KCAC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday because of his performance.
“The guys are a big reason I came back for my COVID year,” Seabolt added. “Me, as a leader on the team, I felt I could come back and offer something to them, to continue the train.”
The Threshers will be back in action in Salina on Saturday against ninth-ranked Kansas Wesleyan. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at JRI Stadium at Graves Family Sports Complex.
