Community, sports converge in Bethel's ultimate frisbee club
Club president Andrew Graber speaks about this unique campus sport.
The Bethel College Ultimate Frisbee Club is soaring to new heights. This dynamic and inclusive club has become a focal point of athletic and social engagement on campus. It brings together students and community members from various backgrounds who share a passion for this unique sport.
Ultimate Frisbee, often referred to simply as ultimate, is a non-contact team sport that combines elements of soccer, football, and basketball while putting a flying disc at its core. It's known for its emphasis on sportsmanship, fair play, and camaraderie. The game is played on a rectangular field, with two teams striving to score points by catching the frisbee in the opposing team's end zone. The twist? Players can't run while holding the frisbee, so quick passes and strategic positioning are key.
One of the standout features of the Bethel College Ultimate Frisbee Club is its commitment to inclusivity. Whether you're a seasoned player or a newcomer just looking to try something new, there's a place for you on the team.
“It is still a very new club but … we are happy to include anyone who has an interest in ultimate, regardless of their skill level,” emphasized club president Andrew Graber from Divide, Colo.
The club meets regularly, fostering a sense of teamwork and skill development among its members. “We don't have any official practices, but we do play weekly games where there are a lot of knowledgeable players who are always happy to help new players get adjusted to the game,” added Graber. Thus, these sessions are not just about honing athletic prowess but also about having fun and building a sense of belonging.
Beyond the competitive aspect, what truly sets this club apart is the strong sense of community it fosters. Friendships formed on the field extend beyond the game, leading to a tight-knit group that supports one another both on and off campus.
“I think the strong community around Ultimate has a lot to do with the fact that no matter what team you are on you rely so heavily on your teammates,” said Graber. “Lots of Ultimate teams are made up of anyone and everyone who shows up, so you have to learn how to work together with the skills they have.
“We just got our budget approved so we will have some custom disks coming soon and plan to give them as prizes for other events and see about distributing them to students.”
The Bethel College Ultimate Frisbee Club welcomes new members with open arms and encourages anyone curious about the sport to give it a try. It’s a shining example of how sports can unite a diverse group of individuals under the banner of camaraderie. As they continue to grow and thrive, this club can be expected to reach even greater heights in the future, both on and off the field.
So, grab a frisbee, join in the fun, and experience the joy of flying discs with the Bethel College Ultimate Frisbee Club. It's not just a game; it's a vibrant community waiting to welcome students with open arms.
