Community Assistants foster student involvement
A highlight of the work Community Assistants do, and a look at their most recent event.
Bethel College is a community-based school, consistently hosting events with the members of the community in mind. At football games there are golf cart shuttles to make it easier for fans to get to their seats, and event admissions have student and senior discounts.
At bigger universities, the dorms/ student life have what are referred to as RAs, also known as Resident Assistants. This is where Bethel differs from most schools. Instead of having RAs in the dorms, we have a Director of Residential Life named Larry Rice.
Student assistants in the dorm are called CAs, or Community Assistants. This emphasizes the community culture within the dorms, showing that every student is included and part of the community. These CAs are the students who check in on other students, do room checks, are available around the clock in case of emergencies, and defuse any disputes between fellow students.
Additionally, they put on events around the campus. On Wednesday, October 23, Isaiah Smith, a junior from Great Bend, put on an UNO Tournament in the Haury Lounge. Students were invited to enjoy snacks, hang out, and compete in one of the most competitively fun card games, UNO.
At this particular game night, the winner received a DoorDash gift card. To win the gift card a player had to win a certain number of games during the tournament. “The night was a lot of fun,” said Kayla Richardson, a senior from Kellyville, Oklahoma. “I got to meet people that I might not have otherwise met.” The ultimate winner of the gift card was Tommie Harthorn, a sophomore from Bakersfield, California.
CA events, such as this one, go on all around the campus of Bethel College. A big one students can look out for next month is their Thanksgiving dinner. For this event, the CAs plan to prepare “a dish or dessert of their choice to serve in Haury Hall for all Bethel students” Smith said.
If you’re a Bethel College student, stay on the lookout for upcoming events being put on. CAs and campus clubs are always busy throwing fun events for students.
