Coach Markham's defensive strategy: Building success for Bethel football
Bethel football's defensive coordinator, Daylon Markham, shares his vision for the upcoming football season.
Bethel College football's defensive coordinator, Daylon Markham, has been making waves with his strategic approach to defense. Last season, the team relied heavily on blitzing to generate pressure, but Markham is determined to evolve the defensive playbook for the upcoming season. In an interview, he shared insights into his plans for the team's defense and his meticulous approach to player development.
"Last year, we had to blitz frequently to create pressure," Markham explained. "But this season, I want us to be able to play coverage and still generate pressure with just four players." To achieve this goal, Markham is implementing different pressure packages and focusing on honing the skills of his players during spring practice.
With the help of assistant Kade Miller, who brings firsthand experience playing in this defensive scheme, and Mike Gant, a former player with professional football experience, the coaching staff is equipped with the knowledge and drills necessary to elevate the players' performance.
"We're focusing on the small details in practice," Markham emphasized. "Despite having low numbers this spring, it's allowed us to conduct individual work extensively, addressing specific weaknesses and improving technique."

Moreover, Markham's attention to detail extends to studying opponents' plays that exploited their weaknesses in the past. By practicing against these plays repeatedly, the team aims to develop effective counterstrategies and enhance their overall defensive prowess.
"Our strength coach has played a crucial role in enhancing our players' physical attributes," Markham noted. "With increased agility, speed, and strength, we're better prepared to execute our defensive strategies on the field."
In addition to physical conditioning, Markham places a strong emphasis on mental discipline. "We work on our weaknesses daily," he stated. "Whether it's improving coverage, tackling, or discipline, our focus remains on refining our skills and eliminating errors."
For the defensive backs (DBs), this means drilling route concepts and technique rigorously. Meanwhile, linebackers (LBs) concentrate on pass coverage, and all players engage in route matchups regularly during practice sessions.
"Our tackle turnover circuit is designed to enhance tackling skills," Markham explained. "Despite low numbers this spring, we prioritize tackling proficiency to ensure our defense remains solid."
Discipline is another key aspect Markham addresses through strategic methods. Defensive Linemen (DLs) react to offensive line movements instead of relying solely on predetermined drills, while defensive backs face consequences for lapses in focus with additional conditioning drills.
Looking ahead to the next season, Markham acknowledges the challenge posed by the lack of depth on the roster. However, he remains optimistic about the team's potential and emphasizes the importance of preparing incoming players to contribute immediately.
"With about 25 players on defense currently, we'll rely on incoming recruits to bolster our ranks," Markham stated. "We'll conduct separate film sessions and lean on our experienced players to help the newcomers adjust to our defensive system."
Markham's meticulous approach to defensive strategy and player development has positioned Bethel College football's defense for success. By prioritizing attention to detail, refining skills, and addressing weaknesses head-on, he and his coaching staff are primed to lead the team to even greater heights in the upcoming season.
