Bethel women open conference strong with win over McPherson
Newcomers McKinzie and Richards led the way with memorable performances.
MCPHERSON — The Bethel women’s basketball team rolled over McPherson 82-58 in their first conference action of the season, led by strong nights from Thresher newcomers.
“We ran the floor very well,” said interim head coach Rocky Lamar. “I am excited about the fact that the ladies are buying into being a running team. We need to continue winning the rebounding battle and must keep getting fast break baskets.”
The Threshers out-rebounded McPherson 45-34. Freshman Madyson McKinzie led the way with 12, and she added 18 points to record her first college double-double for the Threshers. Junior transfer Natalie Richards from Feather River College also had a career night with 21 points to lead the Threshers on the night, adding eight rebounds to her stat line as well.
“[I used] the days leading up to work on and visualize the things I can do as a player to help us be successful,” said Richards, from Reno, Nev. when asked about her big performance for the Threshers on Wednesday.
Three more Threshers joined McKinzie and Richards in double figures. Junior Carley Robb added 12 points for Bethel and sophomore Caryn Yoder added 11. Kendall Locke continued her fast start to her freshman campaign by filling up the stat sheet with 11 points, eight boards, and six assists.
“As we started our season we had to learn to adjust to each other’s playing styles, but I believe everything is just falling into place,” said McKinzie from Dumas, Ark. about the Threshers' big win on Wednesday night.
This Threshers squad is looking to make some noise in the KCAC this year, and with a combination of veteran experience, young talent, and an NAIA Hall-of-Famer at their helm, the Bethel women’s basketball team hopes to do just that.
The Threshers will take on Bethany in Thresher Gym on Saturday at 5 p.m. as they are looking for their first win against the Swedes since February of 2021.
