Bethel volleyball has slow first day, bounces back second day of Labor Day Classic
Threshers went 2-2 on the weekend in North Dakota.
SIOUX CITY, N.D. — The Bethel volleyball team went 2-2 in the Labor Day Classic, losing their first two matches on Friday against Dakota State and Morningside before bouncing back on Saturday to take down Briar Cliff and Governors State.
Over the weekend Cam Offerle led the way adding up 43 kills and Mia Roman led had 65 assists with Kaitlyn Shima close behind with 59 assists combined.
“We haven't had a game this season where we have all of our hitters firing at the same time,” said head coach Adriana Leake. “We'll have one or two hitters have the best game of their lives and one or two hitters have the worst game of their lives and that continued this weekend. … I definitely feel we are in the process of getting where we need to be and I'm excited for when it all clicks.”
The Threshers were dealt a blow in their last game of the weekend however, when junior middle blocker Jordan Boone came down with an ankle injury. Bethel will rely more on their fifth-year senior Julie Wilhite in the upcoming stretch of games to fill Boone’s place.
“With each new season, culture is redefined,” junior Maddie Chupp from Goshen, Ind. said. “We are in the process of building up our culture and learning how to play not only with, but for one another. Once our chemistry on the court clicks, and we all buy in to what it means to be a part of Thresher Volleyball, we’ll be unstoppable.”
The Threshers are also looking forward to adding an important piece back onto the court soon. Katey Wilhelm, Bethel’s all-conference libero and fifth-year senior has been cleared to play from her achilles surgery and is looking to add some veteran energy into the Thresher lineup.
Bethel will have their home opener this week and a home triangular this weekend.
“I am most looking forward to finally getting to play with the student section cheering us on,” says Offerle when asked about the Threshers’ home opener. “Many people have talked about the hype our school brings to athletic events and I am ready to finally experience that.”
The Threshers will take on Cottey for their home opener on Tuesday, Sep. 15 with the game scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. in Thresher Gym.
