Bethel students bring spooky delight to the stage with The Addams Family musical
The must-see production promises a creepily fun theater experience.
The Bethel College theater department will cast its spell over audiences this fall with a captivating production of The Addams Family musical. Under the direction of Damon Klassen, this eerie yet heartwarming show has become the talk of the town. It is guaranteed to deliver a spine-tingling experience that promises laughter and a generous dose of the macabre.
The production, staged as the spooky season begins, was selected for its perfect blend of fun, community appeal, and because it's "so bloody fun," as Klassen put it.
But it's not just the choice of the musical that's making waves; it's the dedication and hard work of the entire cast and crew that has brought it to life.
Klassen described the creative process behind this production as a result of tireless teamwork. “The production crew met each week to communicate about progress made and work yet to be done,” said Klassen.
He also gave credit to Kelsey Terra, the Technical Director, stating that she “gets the credit for the creative set. She's put in a ton of hours and the results are looking great.”
Furthermore, Klassen highlighted the riotous opening number, “When You’re an Addams,” as a must-see. The dedication of the cast, combined with the guidance of choreographer Lydia Terra, has led to mesmerizing dancing and astounding performances. Terra's creative methods, including strength building exercises and aerobic work, have helped the cast deliver a show-stopping performance.
The Bethel College production of The Addams Family isn't just your typical adaptation. Klassen hinted at several unique and innovative surprises for the audience, including the use of an unexplored part of the stage. "I won't say more in hopes that some of your readers will enjoy the surprise," Klassen added.
Moreover, the show is filled with clever prop gags, many of which were crafted by Kelsey Terra and the Theater Practicum students. The students have played an integral role in the production's success by contributing to the set and by managing technical aspects such as lights and sound.
Beyond the dark humor and captivating performances, Klassen hopes the audience will take away messages of love, honesty, and family unity. “The Addams embrace all things ‘other’ with empathy and humor. I hope folks will laugh and love right along with them,” said Klassen.
Audiences attending The Addams Family can expect not only delightful dances but also beautiful songs that will transport them into the mysterious world of the Addams family.
“I couldn't be more grateful for the hard work and dedication of the entire cast and crew that have made The Addams Family a must-see event in the Bethel College community," said Klassen.
The musical performances are Friday at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are available online.
