Bethel indoor track breaks three more records at Washburn Rust Buster
Logue, Paulino, Roman, and Schrag broke all three of the records over the weekend.
TOPEKA — The Bethel indoor track and field teams competed again this past weekend at the Washburn Rust Buster and broke three more records.
This is the 4th consecutive week that the team has broken a record in some capacity. The first broken record of the weekend came on Friday evening as the women's distance medley team of Mia Roman, Myiah Logue, Taryn Paulino and Bethany Schrag broke the school record by 30 seconds as they finished with a time of 13:26.37.
“It has been a really fun season seeing all these new records being set and broken,” Roman from Kansas City said. “I am happy with how my races went this weekend, and I am looking forward to conference and watching our team compete.”
The next record broken was Schrag shattering her own record by three seconds in the 3,000-meters with a time of 11:32.62. Paulino then broke the record in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:28.63 but was outlasted by Roman in the following heat who ran a 2:27:01 and was given the new record.
On the men's side, the distance medley relay team of Luke Schmidt, Fabian Talavera, Braden Esau and Tobin Wise finished 13th with a time of 10:45.86. Individually, Tobin Wise ran a personal record best with a 1:58.71 time in the 200-meter and finished 30th.
“This meet was one I will never forget,” Wise from Pleasant Hill, Mo. said. “I had been chasing sub 2 minutes in the 800-meter for years and that day finally came. The 800-meter race itself went out exactly how I wanted it. It went by so fast I almost forgot what had happened.
As soon as I crossed the line and my time came up, I threw my hands up in excitement. Not only did I break two minutes, but I ran 1:58 which made the race even more memorable. I’m excited to keep working with this race under my belt and hopefully see some more crazy performances at the conference meet.”
With all these broken school records under their belt during the short indoor season, the teams are preparing for the conference indoor meet next.
“Our team continues to set the bar higher and higher every week,” distance coach Julio Martinez said. “The growth in performance the team has accomplished this season is just incredible. Everyone went out and competed in a tough field filled with D2 athletes. Some athletes were tasked with some tough doubles, and others stepped up to fill in roles, and as a coach, that's all you can ask for. Great momentum going into the Indoor KCAC Track and Field Championship.”
The Threshers will be back in action on Feb. 12 and 13 for the KCAC Indoor Championships in Omaha, Neb.
