Bethel flag football falls to Midland in home opener
The Threshers will have a chance to bounce back on Saturday.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Bethel flag football team took the field at Thresher Stadium for the first time and made new improvements as they faced the Warriors of Midland. A slow start to the game ultimately ended in the Threshers falling 40-0 in their home opener.
The Thresher defense was strong to start, holding Midland from the end zone on its first two possessions. The Warriors broke the scoreless drives with a touchdown afterwards, adding an extra pair of trips to pay-dirt in the second quarter to lead at halftime, 20-0.
In the beginning drive of the second half, Bethel senior Mikinzie Harkins intercepted the ball — one of her two interceptions of the day — and stopped the Warrior drive. After a Bethel turnover on downs, Midland took off on another scoring run and scored on their next three possessions. Those possessions would lead to the final score — a 40-point defeat for the Threshers as they continue to seek their first points of the campaign.
Bethel quarterback Kylah Rome threw for 97 yards on 11 completions. Jaquelle Tucker led the defense in tackles with 11.
The first year team has come a long way and has worked hard to improve their team chemistry, core skills, and skill enhancement. The Threshers have a willingness to learn more and keep fighting.
“The ladies have worked very hard and their successes are too many to count as they are scattered through out the competition, some on an individual basis and some as a team,” head coach Angela Rowe said. “When they’re just learning, you can’t expect them to know everything or how to react,” she told The Newton Kansan. I saw a lot of good things and a lot of things we still need to work on.”
With the loss, Bethel moves to 0-3 overall and in KCAC play. It’ll be back in action on Saturday at 3 p.m. in Leavenworth against Saint Mary. The Threshers will be back at home again on March 27 against Ottawa at 6 p.m.
