Bethel College club highlight: Diversity Council
A look into DivCo's first event and their goals for the upcoming semester.
Bethel College provides various clubs and activities for its students to attend or participate in. One of the most popular on campus is Diversity Council, more commonly known as DivCo. DivCo represents the various backgrounds and ethnicities of Bethel College students.
Wednesday night DivCo honored the Hispanic heritage and facilitated a game entitled Lotería. This game is a traditional board game very similar to the well-known game Bingo, however, this game uses pictures and occurs at a much faster pace.
The idea of the game is that one person draws cards and reads what is on them to the group. Then each player matches what is read with their card, with the goal being to get four matches in a line. Once you get four matches in a line you yell out “Lotería!” and take your card to get checked.
Wednesday’s event had many in attendance and there were multiple winners per round, meaning the competition was very lively and competitive.
DivCo is a well-loved club around campus. This is likely because “Everyone is different,” says DivCo member Maria Cortez-Hernandez. “It’s a great way to celebrate those differences… [and] build community.”
This is Cortez-Hernandez’s third year as a member of the diversity council. She is one of their head planners and helps to put on events such as Lotería, and Cinco De Mayo. Cortez-Hernandez shared that the Hispanic ethnicity is largely represented on the council.
She shared that “We are adding more members of different backgrounds” and made sure to mention that “anyone is welcome to join. You just need to be committed. We love new people.”
Embracing the cultures of students around campus is a wonderful tradition that DivCo creates space for. We have many International students in the student body at Bethel College and learning about their cultures brings everyone together. This club in particular is a very important part of the culture of Bethel College. Check out DivCo or one of the other clubs hosting events around campus. Get connected!
