Auditions for the spring musical "Violet" to be held Nov. 14-15
Students are invited to audition with a 32-bar cut of a musical piece for this emotional mid-sized show.
As the fall semester winds down, many departments have begun to look forward to their events next semester.
One of these is the Bethel College Theater Department, which has begun the process of setting up its spring musical, “Violet,” a show about a young woman seeking a journey of transformation only to find acceptance. The show is set in the mid-1960s and features a prominent cast of various characters, from soldiers and singers to preachers and radio speakers.
This show will be coming off the heels of last year’s shows, the comedic play “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) {revised}” and the emotional roller coaster of a musical “Bright Star,” as well as this year’s heart-wrenching drama “Quiet in the Land.”
Despite these massive shoes to fill, third-year director Dr. Karen Robu is optimistic, and having directed this show twelve years ago has the experience to bring this show to life. “I (am) looking forward to “‘Violet,’” Dr. Robu said. “There are themes of redemption and healing, and it addresses important issues, has great characters, and has a beautiful score and an uplifting ending.”
Working alongside Dr. Robu is Bethel’s new choir director, Dr. Henry Waters, who will be leading the musical side of the show in his first-ever Bethel College theater production. Damon Klassen will once again be the mastermind behind the sets and props of the show. A student and community crew is also expected to take their place in the orchestra pit, bringing their much-needed talents to round out this production.
Auditions for “Violet” will be hosted on Nov 14 and 15 in the Choir Room in the FAC from 7 to 9 p.m. All auditioners will be expected to perform a 32-bar excerpt of a song and may be asked to read and perform lines from the show itself. The three-day performance for the musical will be in March of 2023.
