A snapshot of the jazz ensemble's concert lineup
Take a look at the upcoming jazz ensemble performance.
This Tuesday the Bethel College Jazz ensemble will be performing their spring concert. The concert will be composed of six pieces of various styles by a range of composers.
The big band will open with two pieces that have a Latin feel. The first of which is “Have You Met Miss Jones?” arranged by Frank Mantooth which has an upbeat samba groove. The second piece is “My Ship” arranged by Dave Rivello. This piece has a light Latin feel with a soli trumpet and alto saxophone line throughout.
Next the group will be performing “Bewitched” arranged by Mark Taylor, a standard originally written by Lorenz Hart and Richard Rodgers. The piece features a brief section with double-time swing, as well as a lead solo vocalist throughout. Sophia Chindamo will be providing the lead vocals for this piece.
The group will also perform “Love Beams,” another Mark Taylor arrangement, and “Goin’ On,” a swinging piece by Benny Carter which has been recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra.
The final piece is “Anitra’s Dance,” arranged by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. Junior April Powls is one of the lead trumpets in the brass section. She speaks about what makes this piece a great closer. “I really enjoy playing ‘Anitra’s Dance.’ It’s been a fun piece to play especially because it’s this spunky parody of the Peer Gynt Suites but done in Duke Ellington’s Iconic style. It has all the things I love and, as a trumpet player, I get to play some interesting parts. It’s just a fun piece!” said Powls.
This concert will take place in the Luyken Fine Arts Center on Tuesday, March 5. The downbeat is at 7 p.m. in Krehbiel Auditorium. As senior Phillip Balzer said: “there’s a good variety of classic and modern styles. It’s going to be a good time!” Come out and enjoy some Bethel College jazz.
