She was able to experience playing college volleyball at Friends University before transferring to Newman University and having a baby. This led her to switch from being a player to starting her coaching journey at Neosho County, where her stepdad had been coaching women’s basketball.

“Coaching is all about who you know,” said VanRoyen.

Her first coaching job was as an assistant softball coach instead of volleyball. She was 21 and realized quickly that softball just was not the right fit for her. VanRoyen remembers seeing how excited her head coach was about softball. This made her realize that she did not feel that way about softball, but about volleyball instead. With a new goal in mind, she got an opportunity to be an assistant volleyball coach at Garden City Community College, along with being an assistant women’s basketball coach and the head coach of cheer and dance.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" fiancé going to physical therapy school, they relocated to the Kansas City area, where she coached the volleyball team at Highland Community College. “We had a few really successful seasons up there,” VanRoyen said. She then applied for the head position at Pratt Community College, where Tim Schwarzenberg was the athletic director at the time, and got the job. She spent four years coaching at Pratt before now coaching the volleyball team at Bethel, reuniting with athletic director Tim Schwarzenberg.

“Spring is where development happens,” VanRoyen said when asked how she feels about joining the team during the spring season. She explained that the offseason is a vital piece in moving forward as a team and allows them to grow “bigger, better and stronger.” Arriving at Bethel was smoother than expected due to other coaches welcoming her with open arms. VanRoyen described the culture at Bethel as unique compared to her previous college experiences.

“We are not only here for ourselves, but for all student-athletes, which is quite rare to find.”

The support and communication are not limited to each sport but come from the entire athletic department.

Her goals for the team are to build a strong foundation of trust that each player can rely on for support. “Really, it’s about being present and being in these experiences with them,” she said. “Good or bad, it doesn’t matter.” VanRoyen wants to be a cheerleader for her team as well as a coach. She believes that if the team trusts her, players will better understand the decisions she has to make, creating a stronger team environment. She also expects everyone to bring their own personality to the team. “I believe that to be a well-rounded team, everyone needs to be able to be their authentic selves.” She explained that when players feel comfortable enough to “just be themselves,” they can focus on performing their best on the court.

“Volleyball is a mental sport, and the only way to build upon achievements from last season is to be competitive and push one another.” In volleyball, someone always scores, making it different from many other sports. When players make mistakes and lose a point, they must transition quickly to the next play and showcase their “next ball mentality,” as VanRoyen describes it.

VanRoyen believes the team has strong potential and ambitious goals for the future. “I believe a realistic goal is to host a playoff game each year,” which requires finishing in the top four of the conference. She emphasized this success will not come automatically from last season but requires the entire team to stay unified. By working hard each day, building a positive team environment and refusing to give up, VanRoyen believes the team is capable of great things. “All the hard work will pay off when our team faces tough conference competition.”

Trusting the Process: When Quiet Confidence Breaks Records

Inside Cross Country Runner Bethany Schrag’s rise to the NAIA national stage

Grace Dawes

In 2024, the first Thresher woman qualified for the NAIA Cross Country National Championships. That athlete was Bethany Schrag, a senior education major from Valley Center.

Schrag said she originally began running because of encouragement from her cousin and sister. “My sister also encouraged me, and she kind of asked my PE teacher, who was also the cross country coach, if she would encourage me to try out.”

When asked what brought her to Bethel College, Schrag explained that her high school coach began working at Bethel during her senior year. Although the coach did not stay long, Schrag ultimately decided to commit.

“I actually didn’t start running until my freshman year of high school,” said Schrag. “I had no experience besides maybe basketball in middle school, but other than that I had no running experience.”

Running can be a demanding sport, and Schrag emphasized the importance of connection with her teammates for motivation. “Being able to come to practice with my teammates, especially my girls, they motivate me a lot,” she said. “And also my coach motivates me a lot, just wanting me to meet the goals that he knows I can reach.”

“He knows that I can succeed, so having him there always helps me stay motivated to want to do better and want to keep at it.”

Head cross country coach Julio Martinez highlighted Schrag’s strengths as both a competitor and teammate. “Bethany can be summed up best as someone who looks like a butterfly but stings like a bee. She competes with a quiet confidence, but when it’s time to race, she’s fearless and relentless.”

“Bethany embraces every challenge put in front of her and pours everything she has into reaching each goal,” Martinez said. “She’s supportive, selfless, and always willing to help others, making her truly one of a kind within our program.” Martinez also noted that since his arrival as head coach, Schrag now holds eight school records.

When asked what it has been like to coach Schrag, Martinez emphasized her growth and drive. “What makes her journey so special is that just when we think we’re approaching her ceiling, she continues to raise it.”

“It was definitely a moment I’ll never forget,” Schrag said when talking about qualifying for nationals. “When my name was called, it was kind of surreal.” She added that she was unsure she had qualified when she finished the race. “It wasn’t something I was expecting, so it was definitely something I’m very proud of.”

<a class="image-link image2 Even on the days where I really don’t want to get out and run, even doing the smallest thing like stepping outside.”

“In the end, you’re only going to get better if you just keep going at it,” Added Schrag.

Over Christmas break, Schrag competed in the NAIA Marathon Classic in Dallas. “If I did the marathon, it would be something that my past self would never believe I could, so why not?” Said Schrag.

“I trusted the process, I trusted my coach,” continued Schrag. “I trusted myself, too, and I listened to my body. If I needed to take a break to prevent an injury, I listened.”

Schrag said the support of her teammates helped her through the 26.2-mile race. “I had two of my teammates come with me on the trip, Marcus [Fiedler] and Emma [Graber], and just the support back at home, it was immeasurable.”

“Bethany is genuinely one of the best people to have with you on the starting line,” said junior Emma Graber from Divide, Colo. “She is supportive and motivating every day at practice and especially on race days. I’ve been running with her since my first day at Bethel, and she is my favorite person to run with.”

In addition to competing, Schrag is a member of the Bethel Choir. “I will say it’s a challenge to balance student teaching, running, and choir,” she said. “But in the end, singing in the choir and also running—it’s my way to decompress after a stressful day at school.”

Looking back at her time being a part of the cross country team, Schrag said the relationships she built at Bethel have meant the most. “We wanted each other to succeed so much, and that’s something I can look back on with positive emotions. And our coaches were so passionate, and that’s something I’ll always remember.”

Turning Passion Into Purpose: A New Club Begins Serving Beyond Campus

How Bethel students have helped make a difference through shared values and service to the community

Daniela Casique

“I felt like Bethel doesn’t do that much service and outreach. I felt there was at least a small group of students that would probably be willing and able to serve the community. So I thought I’d try to make an organization that would provide and help with that.” With this intention in mind, sophomore Ben Janzen, from Henderson, Nebraska, decided to turn an idea into action. Majoring in both business and religion, Jansen shared how the new service club at Bethel College came to life this semester.

What first motivated Jansen to create this organization was his personal passion for service and his hope to inspire more students to engage with the broader community. “It was kind of my own idea,” he explained. “And then when I pitched it around to some friends of mine and some other people who I thought might be interested, they all seemed like they would be interested and would appreciate having this on campus. So I decided to go ahead and go for it and see how it worked out.” The positive response made him officially form a group that could bring students together with a shared mission: making a difference through service and collaboration.

The service club is built around a simple concept, giving students opportunities to step outside campus and serve the community in different ways. The club aims to go out at least once a month, although members often hope to meet even more frequently as participation grows. Whether it involves cleaning, organizing, or assisting with long-term projects, the group focuses on showing up where they are needed around the community.

Junior business administration major, Josiah Buller from Inman Kan., has been an active member since the club’s first meetings. He shared some of the activities they have completed so far. “We’ve had a few events mainly at MCC,” Buller said. “It’s just north of campus, and we have helped clean up around the warehouse.” These early projects, though small in scale, have already given members a sense of purpose and connection.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Bethel students volunteering at the MCC center near campus — Their goal is to expand the club’s reach and create opportunities that will bring lasting positive impact to the community. “As spring comes around, we will do some yard cleaning and some fundraising so we can buy some materials,” Jansen said. “We want to go to the NTC center to help them with infant care and hygiene kits that they send all over the world.” These projects not only meet local needs but also connect students to global service projects.

Buller also emphasized the importance of spreading the word and growing participants. “We want to bring more people or do events on campus so more students join and participate,” he said. Visibility, he believes, is key to helping the club thrive. “The more students learn about the organization,” shared Buller, “the more likely they will feel inspired to join in.”

Being part of the service club offers more than just volunteer hours, it opens the door to meaningful connections, new friendships, and the chance to be part of something important. “If you feel free and called to serve,” Jansen said, “reach out to me or any of the members. Offerle has been the leader in the NAIA when it comes to kills and was described by her coach as having the statistics of two players combined. She was also just selected to be an All-Conference First Team member, showing the impact she has had on the whole conference this season.

Offerle did not start her career as one might expect. When she started playing volleyball in third grade, she was not a big fan of it and instead described herself as a “die-hard basketball fan.” This changed once she reached middle school, where the sport itself got more competitive, and she started to enjoy playing volleyball. “In high school is where I really grew to love it,” Offerle shares. She went to Spearville High School in Dodge City, Kan. where she had an amazing relationship with her volleyball coach. This was where she grew passionate about volleyball and started improving as a player.

Coach Leake still recalls meeting her for the first time in an open gym at Bethel and loving her from that day on. Even though Offerle was not happy with her performance that day, Coach Leake explained that she was still able to see the amount of potential within her. The reason Offerle wanted to join Bethel was because of the special culture within the team. “No other school I visited had girls that enjoyed playing volleyball this much while still being such hard workers,” she explained.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Offerle spiking the ball against Oklahoma Wesleyan — She believes that this is how she will be the best teammate she can be and that everything else will fall into place as long as she works hard in every moment.

“You can always be a good teammate and work hard,” Shared Offerle.

This is how Offerle explained she makes it through difficult games. Focusing on what she can do when not playing the way she wants to and cheering her teammates on is what ultimately leads her to get her head back into the game as well. “She is a big personality in the team,” Coach Leake explained, adding that no matter if in the locker room or on the court, her teammates know they can count on her.

When it comes to volleyball, she enjoys the fast pace combined with the constant game IQ needed to do well. “Being able to celebrate after each point keeps the energy high,” Offerle shares, emphasizing how exciting it is to share that energy with her teammates. “I know that anything she sets her mind on she will at some point achieve,” Coach Leake commented.

“Friendships and the community is what has been keeping me going,” she explained. She wants the volleyball team to be a fun and safe space for anyone joining the program. By staying connected to the people around her and being grateful for every moment, Offerle keeps her positive mindset, constantly being a support system for the whole team. Leake finishes the interview by explaining how grateful she feels to be a part of Cameron Offerle’s career. “She is such a special player, and I am so lucky to be her coach.”

Finding Meaning in Every Story: Dr. Raschke Joins Bethel’s English Department

From TikToks to timeless novels, Bethel’s newest English professor believes anything that tells a story is worth studying.

Lilli Reisser

Whether it is a TikTok video or a 500-page novel from the past, Dr. Daniel Raschke believes both can hold equal value and serve as interesting teaching material. The new visiting assistant professor of English shared his thoughts on literature, teaching, and his first impressions of Bethel.

Before coming to Bethel, Raschke studied in Germany, where he completed his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in American Studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. He received a scholarship for an exchange year at Georgia State University in Atlanta, where he met his wife. After finishing his studies in Germany, he applied to Florida State University to complete his doctorate in English.

“I had multiple students question the existence of my doctorate,” Raschke said with a laugh, “which is why it now has its well-deserved spot on my office wall.”

When asked how he ended up at Bethel, Raschke said he was won over by the kind and welcoming nature of the staff and students he met during his campus interview. “Everyone seemed excited for me to join the community,” he shared, noting that he was pleasantly surprised not only by the staff’s enthusiasm but also by how eager the students were to engage with him.

“The mindset of Bethel felt so good, I decided on the fly to take the job, even if it meant moving halfway across the country,” You can make a few hundred bucks, so it’s not bad.”

Although fishing has not directly influenced Bell’s thoughts or perceptions about college life, academics, or sports, it has helped him in many other ways. “It helps me to get my mind out of work, school, soccer.” He also shared, “I feel like a lot of people cope with stress through drugs, alcohol, or video games, so I utilize fishing as a way to de-stress.”

As for the future, Bell has big goals and aspirations that he wants to achieve. “I want to be one of the biggest YouTubers in the world, so I am working towards that.” Whether it is soccer, fitness, work, or his content creation, Bell believes in putting effort and dedication into the things he is passionate about.

Bell shared tips and advice for other people to go out and fish. “I would definitely encourage everyone to try it. It is peaceful and chill.” There are multiple places around the area. “I usually go to Wichita because it is prettier and bigger.”

Teammate and friend Aden Braggs, a sophomore from Dallas, Texas, had this to say when asked about Bell.

“Calvin Bell is one of the most hardworking people I know, the kind who never asks for shortcuts,” Shared Braggs.

For Bell, fishing is more than just a hobby. It is a way to relieve stress, meet other people with similar interests, and spend time with his friends and family. Finding comfort outside of his main responsibilities helps him stay calm and maintain a healthy college dynamic.

Psych Club: A new space for curiosity and connection

Bethel’s Psychology Club aims to bring students together to explore the mind in an open and engaging way.

Lilli Reisser

“I have wanted to create an informal place for students to learn and exchange ideas about psychology freely.”

Dr. Navanté Peacock

“I have wanted to create an informal place for students to learn and exchange ideas about psychology freely,” Dr. Navanté Peacock said when asked what the newly founded Psychology Club is for.

Since his first year at Bethel, Peacock had noticed that the only time students could talk with like-minded people about psychology was during class. With the establishment of a psychology club, his goal is not only to create a space for psychology majors but also to open the field to anyone and everyone.

“Every waking moment in a person’s life is psychology,” Peacock explained, “and also every sleeping moment, if we’re being precise.”

When talking to the club president, Kazimir Kromwijk, he agreed that the club should be a casual place for anyone wanting to learn more about psychology. A club logo is currently still being designed as well, which could be another fun area students could get involved in after joining.

“This should be a club for students, by students,” Peacock emphasized. While he is excited to have a space to talk with students in an informal way about psychology, he wants students to be in charge of meetings and events.

“I am just a name that appears as the club’s advisor, but the rest is your choice,” he said.

When explaining why the founding of the club only happened at the start of Peacock’s third year at Bethel, he explained that this has been the first time he’s had support from two people. Not only did the psychology department gain a new professor, but it also got a “departmental ambassador” who can help with the workload.

“This has been the first time since I started at Bethel that I felt I had the time to think about other things than classes,” he explained. Having Kromwijk, whose Employment Experience job is to support the psychology department, allowed them to brainstorm the possibilities of having a psychology club.

Kromwijk is a senior hoping to complete his last semester here at Bethel. After graduating, he wants to become a mental coach and explained that being president of the Psychology Club has been helping him prepare for that future. He has been working on his online mental coaching program since being a freshman and is planning to start the self-growth program once he finishes his bachelor’s degree.

Being president of the Psychology Club has allowed him to get used to juggling multiple things at the same time while building a program from scratch. On top of that, learning how to engage with other people effectively to reach a goal is another helpful area the Psychology Club is teaching him for the future.

“We want to present fun things to the community that will lead to them leaving with more knowledge about psychology,” Peacock said when asked to describe what to expect from future club meetings.

Two major events on the horizon for club members include movie nights related to psychology followed by discussions, and the possibility of attending conferences. Conferences are events where people present their studies and research to the public — something Peacock sees as extremely interesting and helpful for each student’s future. It’s an engaging way to learn about psychology without the pressure of presenting one’s own findings.

“The Psychology Club should become a place for people to enjoy themselves while learning more about any part of psychology,” Kromwijk explained. As it is still in its beginning stages, any new member has the chance to influence what the Psychology Club will be like in the future.

TOTY | Teaching from the heart, rooted in relationships: Allen Jantz’s lifelong impact on Bethel College

Allen Jantz reflects on his career at Bethel College highlighting his leadership in teacher education, commitment to student mentorship, and lasting influence on the campus community.

Grace Dawes

There are a number of faculty members who come and go at Bethel College. He has been a professor at Bethel for over 30 years and currently serves as the director of teacher education.

Before his time at Bethel, Jantz grew up in Liberal. With both of his parents being Bethel graduates, choosing a college wasn’t a difficult decision. After graduating, he returned to western Kansas to teach before moving back to Newton to work as an administrator at a school in Wichita.

While working in Wichita, Jantz received a letter from Wynn Goering, now chair of Bethel’s board of directors, and, at the time, vice president of academic affairs. In the letter, Goering asked if Jantz would be interested in applying for a position in the education department.

“I went into teaching because I love working with kids,” explained Jantz. “I went into administration for the wrong reasons, for the money. And while I felt like I was good at it, I was never happy doing what I was doing.” Jantz went on, saying, “So I thought, you know what? I’m going to apply, and the rest is history.”

He highlighted the opportunity to teach again and build relationships with his students as key reasons for returning to Bethel.

“I will tell people my favorite part about teaching is when students student teach, when they are in their clinical experience out in the field,” explained Jantz. “When students go into student teaching, they're still college students and about week six to eight, roughly, they stop being students and they start being teachers.”

“It's just a magical moment. It's like, oh my goodness, my job is done,” expressed Jantz.

He shared that students will often come into his office to do homework or simply to talk, especially when they have something important to share.

Reflecting on the powerful impact of student-teacher relationships, Jantz shared a meaningful experience that captured the heart of his work. “With JT [Jordan Twenter], it was a really special moment,” explained Jantz. “He got his contract to teach, and he brought it up here and had me watch him sign it.” Jantz continued, “We went through it together and we talked about the different pieces of it, but then I got to watch him sign his first contract, and that was like ‘that's what it's about,’ the relationship with students.”

Jantz also makes an effort to be present in his students’ lives outside the classroom. At the beginning of each year, he hands out an information form that includes the question: “What’s one event you’d like me to go to during this year?”

“I try to keep track and make sure that I've done at least one of those events for all of my students during the year,” explained Jantz.

As for the values he hopes to instill, Jantz emphasizes the importance of relationships.

“I can teach my students educational theory, I can teach them methodology, but the passion for teaching has got to come from in here,” said Jantz [gesturing toward his heart].

“I can teach my students educational theory, I can teach them methodology, but the passion for teaching has got to come from in here,” said Jantz [gesturing toward his heart].

Allen Jantz

“Probably the biggest thing beyond that, be your best for the kids,” explained Jantz. “You gotta take your A-game every day, you go into the classroom and some days you may not want to, but fake it.” Along with this, he highlighted the importance of being honest with students when he may not be feeling his best.

As a member of the Bethel community, Jantz shares many of the college’s values.

“The peace tradition is important to me,” shared Jantz. “I also think that beyond that it's Bethel's openness to critical thinking and dialogue.”

For current and future Bethel students, Jantz hopes they make the most of their time at the college. “I hope that they took advantage of maybe doing something in a non-threatening environment that they wouldn't necessarily have done at a larger school,” explained Jantz. “And challenge themselves a little bit to try something new.”

Jantz described a meaningful tradition that marks the transition from student to educator, leaving a lasting impression on those about to enter the classroom. “We have a final seminar where we bring in all of our graduating seniors and then all of our next year's student teachers,” Jantz shared. “I read them a prayer, it's called the last days of school, and how we've done our best and now it's up to them.” Jantz continued, “But about the last thing I say, something I think I've said to every group over the years, but it's go forth and do good things. That's all we ask, ‘Be good people.’”

When asked about being named Thresher of the Year, Jantz said, “I'm humble, I really am,” Jantz went on, “JT and Mason asked me what my greatest award over the years has been, and I've gotten several, but I told them it's not about me, it's about the students.”

“I'm humble, I really am,” Jantz went on, “JT and Mason asked me what my greatest award over the years has been, and I've gotten several, but I told them it's not about me, it's about the students.”

Allen Jantz

He went on to say, “I'm humble,” explained Jantz, “because I don't feel like I do the things I do to get recognized for anything, so it's very humbling to me to receive this recognition, and I'm still in awe, shock, and I hope I live up to it.”

TOTY | A passion for students and service: Jantz named Thresher of the Year

Students and faculty praise Jantz’s unwavering support, impactful teaching, and heart for service.

Daniela Casique

On April 10, The Collegian voted on Allen Jantz, professor of education and director of teacher education, as the recipient of the 2025 Thresher of the Year award. lasting impact on campus life.

Jantz’s influence has been widely felt across campus, both inside and outside the classroom. Students spoke warmly about the ways he has impacted their lives. Mason Bolen, a sophomore from Sumner, Wash. shared, “His biggest, and my favorite quality is how caring he is. Even if you do not know Allen, he would go out of his way to help you out in any way he can.”

Samuel Hernandez, a sophomore from Liberal echoed this sentiment, saying, “His kindness has made me feel at home and [he] has been a father figure to me while being at the college.” He also added, “His detail to support us in our extracurricular activities makes us feel important and that we matter.”

Jantz’s professional dedication and strengths as an educator were also praised. Moses Sawatzky, a junior from Goshen, remarked, “His work ethic is very strong, he works hard and has good teaching skills. His classroom management is amazing and students like to learn from him because they like him.”

Hernandez emphasized Jantz’s thoughtful and inclusive teaching style, stating, “He teaches with such patience and makes sure that we understand what he is explaining to us and comprehend us enough to know when we are struggling.”

Outside the classroom, Jantz’s compassionate presence and service-oriented mindset continue to meaningfully shape the campus community.

Bolen noted, “Allen has contributed by making his life full of service. There isn't a day where he doesn’t love what he does.” He added, “He has contributed towards my success in more ways than one. By being the most encouraging professor you could ask for.”

Sawatzky highlighted the respect Jantz commands among both students and colleagues, “He is one of the most loved or respected members on the faculty. I haven't heard anyone say anything bad about him and he holds the education department pretty well. He is always around and communicates with students in a positive way.”

Faculty members, too, spoke to Jantz’s admirable character and professionalism. Lisa Janzen Scott, associate professor of education and mathematics, described him as someone who “is caring, organized, diplomatic, approachable, respected, curious, receptive, open-minded. But what really sets him apart is his passion for teaching and the success of his students.”

Janzen Scott also acknowledged his leadership and service within the institution as a whole. “He has led the Teacher Education Department through several state/national accreditation visits, most recently this past March. He supports students through attendance at athletic and fine arts events. As a faculty member, he has served on many committees during his years at Bethel.”

Janzen Scott concluded with three powerful words that summarize his impact: passionate, relationship-focused, and caring. “He cares so deeply for education and for his students. He teaches that relationships are the foundation of successful teachers and he models that in and out of the classroom.”

“He cares so deeply for education and for his students. said Hause.

Beyond the classroom and the field, Hause has also invested in campus activism. “Over the course of my time here at Bethel I’ve also been involved in general campus activism, without being in any specific club or organization behind my involvement but more so due to my own passion,” shared Hause. “This year, that’s been allowed to change, and I am now a student fellow for the Office of Culture and Belonging which has allowed me to expand my impact on campus and my activism as a result.”

He emphasized the office’s mission to foster representation and belonging, saying, “The Office of Culture and Belonging, to me, symbolizes Bethel’s greater, and often unacknowledged, attempts to create an environment on campus where students feel equitably considered, respected, and represented when, and how, they want based on their own voices, and the voices of the community at large.”

“The Office of Culture and Belonging, to me, symbolizes Bethel’s greater, and often unacknowledged, attempts to create an environment on campus where students feel equitably considered, respected, and represented when, and how, they want based on their own voices, and the voices of the community at large.”

Grant Hause

He went on to share, “We are an office that is focused on building bridges and not walls within the body of the Bethel Community on campus and within administration, but also building those relationships with the organizations which surround us for the greater good of student welfare objectively.”

Hause’s involvement as a fellow began when Sheryl Wilson, vice president of the Office of Culture and Belonging, recognized his commitment to campus activism. “The opportunity to serve the Bethel community through this office is one that was extended to me by Sheryl Wilson due to my own agency in involving myself with activism on campus, and I could not be more appreciative,” said Hause. “I feel that this opportunity was given to me, it was placed in front of me by the Lord in order to make a great impact, and a positive one; I plan to take full advantage of that chance.”

Wilson first met Hause in her Seminar on Diversity course. “He excelled in my class, he had a curiosity about him, in terms of the different things he would be learning about different people, different cultures, how we approach conversations of difference,” Wilson said. “I felt like he really took it to heart, he impressed me in the sense that he had a maturity beyond his years.”

Wilson highlighted Hause’s continued engagement and personal development, emphasizing the value he brings to the office, saying, “I feel like what he brings to this office is really what I want in a student who has done the work on himself, on themselves, to figure out some of the ways they understand culture and this Bethel experience whatever it means to a person.”

She also highlighted his leadership. “I’m impressed with the ways he is always thinking about different ways we will have conversations about what we hope this office will be and he’s already ten steps ahead – always thinking about it, writing about it, [and] offering ideas,” said Wilson. “Grant leads with his example, I believe he is someone that wouldn’t ask someone to do what he hasn’t already done.”

Looking ahead, Hause hopes students feel seen and supported through the Office of Culture and Belonging. “I want students to feel that the office is an organization on campus which supports them fully, equitably, reasonably, and honestly, without them having to fight for those things to be extended to them,” he said. “I want students to feel like they should be involved with Culture and Belonging, and like Culture and Belonging wants to and is involved with them and their lives and well beings here on campus.”

He also wants to encourage others to speak up and take action. “I want to leave an impact of inspiration towards agency on Bethel’s campus when I leave this place,” Graber

This year, students read the book of Isaiah and So We and Our Children May Live by Sarah Augustine and Sheri Hostetler – two texts that opened doors to reflection on matters like justice, responsibility, action, and community. Designed to foster meaningful dialogue, BIFL equips students with insights and tools that continue to impact them long after graduation.

Through this course, many students gained meaningful knowledge and perspective. April Powls, a senior from Garnett, reflected on how BIFL introduced her to unfamiliar scripture and helped her rethink how she views her peers. “I had never read all the way through the book of Isaiah so it was really interesting to learn about prophecies and visions that Isaiah writes about.” She added, “I learned so much about my friends and classmates. Up until BIFL I had preconceived ideas of who they were, but this class helped me to see them differently.”

Jordan Twenter, a senior from Independence, Mo. also experienced a shift in how he views others, and stated, “I learned a lot about what I believe in, but nothing new about the topic. The main new thing for me was seeing what others believe in and understanding their reasoning.”

For some students, the course also became a way to reconnect with personal faith practices. Eddie Gaeddert, a senior from Goessel, touched on his perspective on faith and spirituality by sharing, “I have always been a believer, but I have struggled with reading scripture, so it helped me a lot to actually get into the Bible.”

Josh Leinbach, a senior from Hesston, had similar thoughts on this matter, “Growing up in a Mennonite family, attending church every Sunday and regularly reading the Bible was a central part of my life. However, I often found it challenging to truly engage with the text on a deeper level. This class, especially our study of Isaiah, transformed the way I approach scripture.”

With the course’s emphasis on discussion, many students found themselves growing not just in faith, but in communication and interpersonal skills as well. Powls shared, “It is almost completely discussion based which is not something you are going to get in other classes and is such great practice for preparing to talk about your own ideas out there in the real world.”

Powls also emphasized the community-building aspect of the course, “It is a great way to connect with people you do not usually interact with who might be more similar to you than you think.”

Gaeddert echoed this point, emphasizing the importance of hearing perspectives that differ from his own. “BIFL is mostly about talking with people who have different opinions than you, you get a sense of other views and it really helps broaden your horizons”.

BIFL has been a core part of Bethel’s curriculum for many years, with numerous students and professors contributing to its ongoing impact. Assistant Professor of Bible and Religion, Peter Goerzen—one of the instructors of BIFL—shared his perspective on the course, “We depend on each other to do theology well, so we have to show up having done the reading and prepared to discuss it thoughtfully. We learn in conversation with each other, and from each other’s perspectives.”

For future seniors preparing to take the class, Goerzen offered this advice, “If you invest in yourself deeply in the course—in the readings, the discussions, and papers—you will have a transformational experience. I certainly did when I took the course 18 years ago.”

“If you invest in yourself deeply in the course—in the readings, the discussions, and papers—you will have a transformational experience. Twenter shared, “No matter what cultural background people come from, their beliefs are valid. I learned that everyone does have a part to play in my faith, and it is up to me to decide whether or not it is important, minor, or convenient.”

From Bethel to Boston: Chemistry students reflect on Pittcon experience

Students share reflections on their recent trip to Boston, where they attended the Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy (Pittcon).

Grace Dawes

Every year the Bethel Chemistry Department offers students a chance to attend the Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy, also known as Pittcon, located in Boston. Dawes

For many of the students, the decision to attend Pittcon was driven by curiosity and a desire to connect with others who share their passion for science. Also, for Killingsworth, positive reviews from past attendees fueled her eagerness to experience the conference firsthand. “I wanted to go to Pittcon because I had heard really good things about it from other students who had gone before,” explained Killingsworth. “I thought the idea of going to a convention full of people who are interested in the same stuff I am was exciting.”

Paulino shared that she was drawn to the experience not only because of the people attending but also because of the opportunity to travel. “I was super enticed by the fact that it was in Boston,” said Paulino. “I had never been that far east before, and for the price of the trip it seemed totally worth it.” Dao and Garber echoed similar motivations for attending.

Beyond the conference itself, students found themselves captivated by the beauty of Boston. Garber reflected on a particularly memorable moment from the trip, “My favorite part of the trip was going down to the waterfront during the night and seeing the skyline all lit up against the Atlantic Ocean,” shared Garber.

Paulino also took advantage of the opportunity to explore. “I got to take a spontaneous multi-hour trip just to see a lighthouse in Salem, and the very next day I got the chance to see the Cathedral of the Holy Cross,” shared Paulino. “It was an amazing experience, and I felt very blessed to share that experience with others on the trip.”

While sightseeing was a highlight, the conference itself left a lasting impression. Dao emphasized how the experience helped her refine professional skills like active listening and networking in a fast-paced environment.

Killingsworth found the exhibit hall particularly eye-opening, noting the diverse range of instruments used in chemistry that were showcased. “Walking around the exhibit hall was so eye-opening,” she said. “Just seeing the variety of instruments was super cool.”

When asked about their biggest takeaways, students spoke about how the experience expanded their understanding of science. “The science world is crazy,” Garber said. “You get an idea of it sitting at Bethel in class, but to go out and experience it is on a whole new level.”

“The science world is crazy,” Garber said. “You get an idea of it sitting at Bethel in class, but to go out and experience it is on a whole new level.”

Caleb Garber

Dao and Killingsworth were especially struck by the variety of research, including unexpected applications of chemistry. Killingsworth recalled a company specializing in odors, where she was given a scent sample to identify. “I had pulled a lemon scent but thought it was mint,” she said. “It was fascinating to see how different chemical compounds are used to create scents for products like candles and cleaning supplies.”

All of the students agreed that Pittcon was an invaluable experience, particularly for those pursuing careers in science. “I would one hundred percent recommend the trip to someone else,” Dao said. Garber echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the value of lectures, poster sessions, and the expo.

Beyond academics, the trip also provided insight into scientific communities outside of Bethel. “Being in a completely different side of the country, with completely different people, helps broaden your horizon and gives you a deeper understanding of just how diverse our nation really is,” Garber reflected.

Podcasting at Bethel: A platform for connection and expression

Eddie Gaeddert and Andrew Schmidt launch a new podcast, Peace of Mind, to share alumni insights.

Daniela Casique

With today's technology advances, there are many ways we can communicate and express our feelings or thoughts creatively. We like to see where the conversation takes us.” He added, “We try to shoot for an hour, the time consuming work is editing, and thanks to Emily [Timperley], we have it pretty easy”

Reflecting on their new project, the two students shared insights on what they have learned from creating the podcast. It is a good time and a different feeling when you are in that space.”

Along the same lines, Schmidt highlighted the value of verbal expression, stating, “I will say it is also nice talking out loud, sometimes you are just in your head talking to yourself so it is fun expressing yourself in a different space.”

The students also shared their future thoughts or plans related to the podcast. Gaeddert mentioned, “I have had some people reach out to me, so I am excited about those. That is what I hope for the future, bringing in different people that have different perspectives.” He added, "Hopefully in the future, we kind of branch out and get different alumni to share their experiences.”

Schmidt and Gaeddert will be graduating in spring, 2025, and they hope that the project will continue to grow. In fact, Gaeddert shared, “Emily Timperley, she asked us the same question, it would be cool if someone took over. We would definitely be willing to pass the torch.”

Finally, they offered advice to fellow Bethel College students, encouraging them to explore the studio space. Gaeddert shared, “I recommend anyone that has interest to get in the studio and just talk with your friends, you don't even have to post it. It is a good time and a different feeling.”

“I recommend anyone that has interest to get in the studio and just talk with your friends, you don't even have to post it. explained Friesen Birky.

Using an electroencephalogram (EEG), she found data that suggests that the type of interaction, whether face-to-face or virtual, as well as the order in which they were completed, did not impact alpha asymmetry, positive and negative affect, or perceived fulfillment differently.

“I will also say that these were all preliminary results and data,” she added. “I'm still collecting data, so results could also change because none of my findings right now are significant due to my small sample size.”

Gaeddert’s research focused on artificial intelligence. “My research was looking at whether or not people can distinguish between AI-generated human faces and original photos of human faces,” he explained. “We are interested in looking at overall detection accuracy in participants.”

Despite familiarity with AI, Gaeddert found that participants’ scores showed that they were merely guessing and could not reliably distinguish real from AI-generated faces.

When deciding on a research focus, Friesen Birky emphasized the importance of social connections and relationships. “With the recent surge in social media and technology usage, I've noticed for myself that connecting with others online is different from connecting in a face-to-face setting,” she said. “I wanted to dive deeper into understanding how face-to-face interactions differ from virtual interactions.”

She expanded on this idea by stating, “We all know that forming connections with others is an innate human need, and it's fundamental to who we are. Not being able to form connections in relationships can be super damaging to your physical and mental health.”

Meanwhile, Gaeddert shared that the rapid development of AI is what sparked his research interests. “It's such a fast-moving, developing sector that research done a year ago is already irrelevant because new models are always coming out,” he explained.

He elaborated on his concerns, saying, “I chose my topic specifically because I was thinking about how AI could be used for misinformation or fake news. I'm really worried about that. I wanted to see how well the average person could actually distinguish AI-generated images—and they couldn't.”

Presenting at the conference was both an exciting and nerve-racking experience for Gaeddert and Friesen Birky.

“I was approached by a lot of people who were super interested in what I was doing,” said Gaeddert. “These people had seen my project and marked it as something they wanted to check out, which just shows how interested they were in my work. As an undergraduate, that doesn’t happen a lot.”

Friesen Birky shared a similar sentiment. “I realized very quickly when presenting my poster that it was easier and more fun to talk about research when you're passionate about the project you're working on, and when you've put so much time and effort into it.”

She added, “It's just fun to be surrounded by people who are passionate and curious about similar things. It was nice to have psychology-related and centered conversations.”

After graduation, Gaeddert plans to attend the University of Kansas School Psychology Education Specialist program, while Friesen Birky hopes to work in a psychology lab so that she can refine her research skills and eventually apply to a social psychology Ph.D. program.

Reflecting on the conference, Peacock emphasized the importance of continuing research in social psychology. “There's a lot of need for us to continue doing the work that we are doing in the current climate, as that is the exact type of work that some are trying to suppress,” he stated. “It's up to us to make sure that people are learning the realities of life through empirically backed research at a time when it is needed the most.”

“There's a lot of need for us to continue doing the work that we are doing in the current climate, as that is the exact type of work that some are trying to suppress,” he stated. “It's up to us to make sure that people are learning the realities of life through empirically backed research at a time when it is needed the most.”

Dr. Navanté Peacock

Peacock also highlighted the dedication of Friesen Birky and Gaeddert. “I got feedback that Katie Rose and Eddie both provided excellent presentations and that people are routinely surprised that a small college like us can produce high-level researchers,” he said. “I think it's a testament to what we have to offer here at Bethel.”

Mia Roman: Dominating two sports, breaking records, and leaving a legacy

Mia Roman reflects on her experience as a member of Bethel College's volleyball and track teams.

Grace Dawes

Being a multi-sport athlete is no easy feat, and accomplishing it for four consecutive years is even more impressive. It’s not about being perfect like volleyball is,” Roman said. “I need the Celsius.”

When asked which sport she enjoys more, Roman said it depends on what she’s doing at the moment. “It’s probably whichever I’m doing at the time,” she said. “For volleyball, I really like the team aspect—having teammates on the floor with you. You do that in track too, but it’s more like you’re running relays.”

She also highlighted the different mental demands of the two sports. “Track is a lot about just pushing your body through pain and seeing how much pain you can put your body in,” Roman said. “It’s more fierce when you’re just racing—it’s just you and a time.”

During races, Roman makes a conscious effort to maintain a positive mindset. “I usually focus on trying to gain on someone in front of me, trying to be very positive in my mind. Either that or I try to go blank—or if we have a game plan, I really focus on those things,” she said.

“I have a saying, which is just ‘run pretty,’” Roman explained. “I feel like if I run pretty, I have good mechanics, so it’ll take care of itself.” She also emphasized the importance of positive self-talk and hyping herself up near the end of a race.

Roman appreciates the support from her teammates during competitions. “I have great teammates, so I’ll always hear people yelling at me. They’ll spread themselves out along the track,” she said. “A lot of people like getting in my face or yelling at me to do whatever, and that really, really helps.”

Bethel’s cross country coach and assistant track and field coach, Julio Martinez, praised Roman’s work ethic and leadership. “Mia has been a pleasure to work with,” he said. “From day one, she has bought into the new challenges that came from moving up to longer-distance training and racing. She has embraced the good and the bad and has risen to greater heights as an athlete.”

Martinez also highlighted her competitive spirit and team-first mentality. “Mia is a natural competitor, and I can always count on her to get the job done on race day,” he said. “She’s reliable, and her coachability has led her to break multiple records over the last two seasons.”

Beyond competition, Martinez emphasized Roman’s leadership and impact on her teammates. “Mia is a great competitor, but she is an even better teammate. Always supporting teammates, her energy is welcoming, which makes her a joy to coach. Her leadership will definitely be missed next season.”

“Mia is a great competitor, but she is an even better teammate. Always supporting teammates, her energy is welcoming, which makes her a joy to coach. Her leadership will definitely be missed next season.”

Julio Martinez

After Bethel, Roman plans to attend physical therapy school and study abroad.

For those looking to follow in her footsteps, Roman offered some advice. “The race really starts when you start feeling pain because that’s when everyone is feeling pain. You’re going to go through pain, but it makes the running high after so worth it. If you hit that time, it’s very rewarding.”

Bethel College students navigate personal and professional growth through D.C. internships

Andrew Graber and Eli Regier reflect on their time in Washington D.C. with the Washington Community Scholars Program (WCSC) this past semester.

Daniela Casique

For some students, completing an internship is a requirement for graduation. The organization maintains these properties and advocates for affordable housing in Washington, D.C. Discussing his responsibilities, Graber noted, “I helped with marketing, took photos, updated their website, and secured fundraising money and donations. I worked 20 hours a week and had two classes after my internship.”

Regier, on the other hand, had the opportunity to pursue teaching in the nation’s capital. He expanded on his role, saying, “I completed my student teaching at Gonzaga College High School. I was co-teaching high school band, jazz, orchestra, percussion ensemble, and AP music theory.”

Living arrangements were an interesting experience for both students. Graber shared, “We had lots of people from different backgrounds, and because there are only nine people, you have to know everyone really well.”

Regier added, “I lived in a community with eight other college students from multiple universities, and we cooked, cleaned, and took classes together while we were not busy with our internship.” He emphasized that this experience allowed them to step out of their comfort zones and meet people from all around the world.

Beyond their responsibilities, Graber enjoyed exploring hobbies during his time in D.C. “I was biking a lot. There is a street named after every state, and we rode there. Also, since D.C. is a big city, there is so much to do. There is movie night on the National Mall, there is a symphony on Capitol Hill, and it is free to go watch.”

Both Graber and Regier reflected on the personal growth they experienced. Regier remarked, “Now is the time to do something out of your field. At this time of your life, we are not yet tied down. This is precisely the time when we should wander outside of our comfort zones.”

“Now is the time to do something out of your field. Regier noted, “Connections get you jobs, not credentials. Resumes are just words on a paper. It is building relationships that will lead you to your dream job.”

Similarly, Graber shared, “I talked to a lot of companies. Habitat for Humanity in D.C.—we partnered with them. I got to talk to the CEO of CNHED. It is crazy because even the bigger companies are willing to help, share contacts, or give advice on whatever you need.”

Regier summed up his experience by encouraging students to pursue similar opportunities: “Why not do it in Washington, D.C.? When else will you have the chance to live in a big city at no extra cost, receive ample support from professors, and build your professional network across the country?”

Keeping the dream alive: Bethel College honors Dr. King's legacy with community leader Larry Additionally, he is the president of the Newton Community for Racial Justice.

“It just seems that the Lord has placed me in these different spots at different times, and you get to sit with others, and you get to see when people are working together, what they can accomplish,” Lee stated at the beginning of his lecture.

During his speech, Lee reflected on August 28, 1963, when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Imagining the expanse filled with 200,000 people, Lee marveled at the power of King’s words sharing, “I don’t know about you, but when I would hear him speak his voice, I mean, wow, it just was wonderful,” Lee reflected. “He hypnotized you with the melody of his words and how he put them together.”

Lee turned the discussion to the present, asking, “And now we come to this today, 2025. Where are we at now?” He reflected on the lasting power of Dr. King’s words, noting that his quotes “fill your heart with hope.”

One that stood out to him was, “You can kill the dreamer, but you can’t kill the dream.” Lee affirmed, “That’s where we’re at in 2025, the dream is still alive.”

“You can kill the dreamer, but you can’t kill the dream.” Lee affirmed, “That’s where we’re at in 2025, the dream is still alive.”

Larry Lee

While acknowledging that it has yet to be fully realized, he remained hopeful, saying, “It is not dead, it will not die. It is very much alive.” Despite the challenges, he expressed his belief that King’s vision still has the potential to come true.

Sheryl Wilson, Vice President of Culture and Belonging, helped organize the event with the Office for Culture and Belonging. She emphasized their mission of fostering an inclusive environment.

“We’re really talking about how every person has a connection to how they come to this institution and we want to create an environment where we’re accepting of all of our layers,” explained Wilson. “We are so diverse in the sense that it’s not just black, white, it’s not just people from the United States, but it’s people from around the world and from amazing places.”

Reflecting on Lee’s message, Wilson highlighted a key takeaway, “He talked about how we’re always kind of aspiring to do these huge things and sometimes we get overwhelmed by that and we do nothing, but it’s the little things.”

Lee encapsulated this idea with a closing statement, “If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way. You don’t have to save the entire world, just save a little part of it.”

Game changer: Kendall Locke's impact on Bethel women's basketball

Kendall Locke's passion, leadership, and dedication are shaping the future of the women's basketball team at Bethel College.

Daniela Casique

The Bethel College women's basketball team has had an outstanding performance throughout the season, with multiple players contributing to their triumphs and success game by game.

One key player is Kendall Locke, a sophomore from Azle, Texas, who has been instrumental in the team's achievements. "This game means a lot to me. It is what I grew up with, and it has taught me leadership, friendship, communication, and teamwork," she explained.

For Locke, receiving this award is a meaningful reminder that hard work pays off. Although this recognition is earned through individual performance, the athlete emphasized the important role her team and coach have played in her journey, and shared, "I couldn’t be the player I am without my teammates and coaches. It not only shows that hard work pays off, but it also shows the dedication I have for this community and program." The team’s energy and competitiveness pushes everyone to give everything on the court, which ultimately leads to individual recognition and collective success in the program.

A strong support system is essential for any athlete, and for Locke, Bethel College’s Head Women’s Basketball Coach, Rory Lamar, has been a key figure in her college career. She acknowledges his belief in her, saying, “On the days when I don’t feel my strongest, he always picks me up and reminds me of the amazing player I am.” She remains grateful, she said, for the impact basketball and her coach have had on her life.

Coach Lamar, in turn, expressed his appreciation for Locke’s development as both an athlete and a person. "The team is confident with her at the point, which is the most important position on the court, and I hope she continues to get better."

He also praised her leadership, adding, “She is a wonderful person and a great leader. She leads in practice, she leads outside of it, and when you have a person like that, the results are usually pretty good.”

Despite her current success, Locke’s transition to college was challenging. Being away from home was difficult, but she found strength in her support system at Bethel. “I have grown and matured so much because I have surrounded myself with people who want to better me, especially a coach who has inspired me, believed in me, and given me the confidence to be a great athlete and person.” Her journey highlights the importance of surrounding oneself with people who uplift and support both personal and athletic growth.

Locke spoke about the team’s development and growth, acknowledging their transformation. “Looking back at last year, it is such an amazing change. We have so much passion and drive for the game.” This dedication and perseverance have been evident throughout the season.

Locke expressed confidence in the team’s future and shared, “I have no doubts this team and season will be remembered for a very long time and will be just the beginning of what Bethel College women’s basketball can truly become.”

“I have no doubts this team and season will be remembered for a very long time and will be just the beginning of what Bethel College women’s basketball can truly become.”

Kendall Locke

Locke’s journey embodies dedication, passion, and commitment. Photo via Meriem Dhouibi

A hackathon, as McArthur describes, is an intense 24- to 48-hour event where programmers and tech enthusiasts compete to create standout software. Participants are given themed challenges and must collaborate to develop creative, functional projects within the time limit.

McArthur and Dhouibi and other members of Bethel’s Software Development Club have attended hackathons hosted by institutions such as the University of Kansas (KU), the University of North Texas (UNT), Kansas State University (K-State), as well as a hackathon held by NASA called the NASA Space Apps Challenge. When the duo competed in the Space Apps Challenge, they won the People’s Choice and Local Impact awards for creating an interactive map of the solar system.

According to the duo, Hackathons are not for the faint of heart. McArthur shared that the UNT hackathon was particularly difficult. “We had to get up and drive five hours the day before. I was just tired the whole time.”

Despite the exhaustion, he described the experience as not only fun but invaluable for the growth of his skill sets. Dhouibi echoed how overwhelming these endurance events can be when she said, “It’s so draining. These hackathons are really fun, and you learn so much, but it takes so much from you.”

When describing the atmosphere of the events, Dhouibi said, “It's so unique. Because all these people are dedicating 36 hours of their lives to just sit and code.” This collaborative environment inspired Dhouibi to continue exploring computer science despite her initial hesitations.

For McArthur, the most rewarding part came when his projects started to “click.” He reflected, “Man, this is actually cool, because I’m building stuff that’s gonna be put on my resume.”

The duo agreed that one of the most significant benefits of competing at a hackathon is the chance to network within the industry. Dhouibi highlighted the peer connections, noting that “Hackathons show you there’s this sense of community, and you connect.” She further emphasized that these events, “give you such a nice gateway to a world of all these people who really want to help you get jobs.”

McArthur agreed, mentioning the corporate sponsors who attend these events: “There are corporate sponsors there as well who want people to make things related to their industry.” He pointed out that companies often genuinely engage with competitors when he said, “They want people to apply to work there, So it’s not like they’re just there to promote their company; they are genuinely interested in you.”

Both students agreed that the trial-by-fire structure of these events builds practical skills. Dhouibi stressed the importance of planning and knowing one’s skills when she says, “Your idea can be the most innovative, the most insane, whatever, but if you don’t know how to execute it, it’s pointless. But you can have this really basic idea, and if you know how to solve it, the judges will love it.”

“Your idea can be the most innovative, the most insane, whatever, but if you don’t know how to execute it, it’s pointless. But you can have this really basic idea, and if you know how to solve it, the judges will love it.”

Meriem Dhouibi

Similarly, McArthur emphasized the importance of hands-on experience when he said, “There’s only so much that professors can teach you. They teach you the basics, but developing an entire program is an entirely different deal.”

To succeed in future hackathons and foster skills in their future careers, both students plan to refine their preparation strategies. McArthur advises, “Build a couple of projects with technologies that you feel like you can learn and you feel accustomed to,” mentioning that being comfortable with one’s skill set is key to success in an industry where people need to have solutions to problems that spring up with little notice.

Dhouibi emphasizes how important it is to ask for help when she recounted, “I was stuck, scared to ask [McArthur], but then, I asked him, and he immediately was like ‘this is it,’ and I got it in like three minutes.”

Beyond refining their technical skills, both students are thinking about the future of software development at Bethel. Dhouibi said, “There needs to be more emphasis on the importance of pursuing outside projects in computer science.”

McArthur agreed, noting that hackathons and similar events help prospective students stand out in the job market: “Software is just so different from any other industry. You have to have projects and stuff on your resume to prove that you actually build stuff and know how to code.”

Balancing sports and science: Wilson and Broxterman's journey through athletics and academics at Bethel College

Karissa Wilson and Claire Broxterman reflect on their experiences at Bethel, with a special focus on their time at KU participating in the Research Experience for Undergraduates program (REU).

Grace Dawes

If you’ve spent time in the Krehbiel Science Center at Bethel College, you’ve likely crossed paths with Karissa Wilson and Claire Broxterman. she admitted. “Then I really got to know the coach and I really got to know the tennis team, and I knew that this was the team I wanted to be a part of.”

Initially, Wilson had different plans on what to major in. “I was a history and political science major, looking at Biology,” explained Wilson. “Then I took chemistry, and I was like, drop everything else.”

Broxterman, meanwhile, was initially drawn to Bethel for softball but soon appreciated the personal connections the small campus offered. “I realized I liked the small environment of Bethel and how I could have nice one on one time with my professors,” she shared. “I think that really sold me on Bethel, that I could make really good connections with professors and classmates.”

“I realized I liked the small environment of Bethel and how I could have nice one on one time with my professors,” explained Wilson, “Tennis gives a place where I get to be outside with my friends just doing productive physical activity for two hours a day.”

Broxterman echoed this sentiment. “If I could, I would study all day long, so softball makes me step back and go do something else so I’m not just in the library or my room studying constantly.”

Wilson’s teammates also play an essential role. “I love my teammates, they’re my biggest supporters,” explained Wilson. “Whenever something exciting happens to me, they’re always the first people I tell.”

Broxterman also emphasized the support that she has received from her coaches, noting how their guidance and encouragement has played a significant role in her growth and success. “My coach has really made it easy to balance everything, just because when I know I have a lot on my plate, he’s like, it’s okay.”

Both Wilson and Broxterman have also achieved exceptional academic success, earning spots in the University of Kansas' prestigious Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program. Broxterman participated in the program in 2022, while Wilson took part this past summer. The REU program, typically reserved for juniors and seniors, provides an opportunity to engage in graduate-level research. Their acceptance as freshmen highlights their remarkable dedication and talent.

“It was an amazing experience,” Broxterman expressed. “It’s really eye opening and for me, personally, it really pushed me. It showed me what research is outside of my small little world at Bethel College.”

For Wilson, the REU program was a transformative experience that deeply shaped her both as a researcher and as a person. “I really think that it has shaped me as a researcher and as a person, honestly,” she said. “It just pushes you to do your best every single second.”

The program not only reaffirmed her love for research but also fueled her drive for growth. “That feeling of just being pushed like that became so addicting because in 10 weeks, I was doing things by the end that I never thought I could even do in 10 weeks,” she added.

Broxterman added, “Once you get a taste, you just want to keep chasing these questions that you don’t know the answer to.”

Wilson also emphasized the supportive environment of the program. “The people in the program were incredible,” Wilson highlighted. “They were always there to support me, and I still talk to them to this day, I have great relationships with them.”

The REU program also played a key role in helping Wilson navigate and overcome personal challenges. Wilson shared, “Something I struggle really bad with is imposter syndrome. I never think that I am good enough to be where I am, and I have a problem of just being like, do they know that they picked the wrong person? At the end of it, I really felt like I was there, I was holding my own, and I was doing a good job.”

Broxterman, a first-generation college student, faced her own fears. “I was really scared I wasn’t going to get into college, I was really scared I was going to fail out,” she admitted. “And then I go to KU, and I’m thriving there, and they’re pushing me.”

Broxterman also highlighted her mom as someone who helped get her to where she is now. “When I’m doubting myself or not feeling smart enough, she will always make sure that I know that I am and that I can do it and just encourage me to do things that I think are impossible and that I could never do.”

When asked for advice for others pursuing higher education or struggling with self-doubt, Wilson emphasized the importance of passion. “Pick something you’re really passionate about and just chase it.”

“Pick something you’re really passionate about and just chase it.”

Karissa Wilson

Broxterman added, “Know that things aren’t going to go your way all the time but be willing to accept that. Where you do stumble a little bit is often where you learn the most and grow the most as a person.”
